Bespoke Thermal Modelling and Overheating Calculations
What are bespoke thermal bridge calculations?
-
Detailed drawings of thermal bridges are entered into Trisco thermal modelling software helping to identify weak points (or areas) within the building envelope. Thermal bridges are created when there is a discontinuity in the thermal performance of a building, enabling additional heat loss They generally occur when the insulation layer is interrupted by a more conductive material or a change in the geometry, for example when a wall meets a floor or around openings like a windows and doorways .
-
By using thermal bridging calculations (psi values ), an accurate rate of heat loss from junctions will be assessed, avoiding the need for any default values.
-
Thermal modelling will also identify any condensation risk factors(fRSI) on internal surfaces which may lead to mould growth causing damage to building fabric.
Who we work with?
Sap assessors among other professionals within the construction industry.
How are Psi values used in sap?
The bespoke Psi-values are used in Y value Sap calculations avoiding default figures, which also helps to comply with Part L of building regulations.
Why use bespoke thermal bridge calculations?
-
As well as improving on your SAP score and avoiding the default Y value of 2.0, bespoke calculations can help avoid expensive design changes to achieve Part L building regulations.
-
The additional heat losses from these junctions can account for 20% to 30% of the overall heat loss through the building fabric.
-
Identifies condensation risk factor(fRSI) on internal surfaces which may lead to mould growth causing damage to building fabric.

Ψ=0.033W/(m.K) Modelled
Ψ=0.18 W/(m.K) Default
Ψ=0.09 W/(m.K) Notional
What we need
-
A scaled and annotated drawing of the junction detail to be modelled.
-
A list of materials and their thicknesses used in the construction and their conductivity wherever possible.
Helvetica Light is an easy-to-read font, with tall and narrow letters, that works well on almost every site.
Our Services
Ψ-VALUE CALCULATIONS
-
Ψ-Value reports for junction modelled for use in SAP report
-
Condensation Risk Factor (fRSI) value
-
Temperature Range Graphics
-
All calculated in accordance with the ISO 10211 exacting standards and the BR 497 guidelines.
TARGET KEY Ψ VALUES
By identifying key thermal bridges, we can help target the Psi values that will provide the most benefit for your scheme, reducing the need for default and notional values and improving your Dwelling Fabric Energy Efficiency (DFEE). Using information necessary for SAP thermal bridge calculation and your target y value weare able to determine the most effective route.
AMENDMENTS
Our amendment service gives you the flexibility to update previously modelled junctions calculated with us. Please get in touch for more information
Overheating
The increased use of insulation, improved airtightness, along with poor design practices, and rising summer temperatures has led to the introduction of Approved Document Part O in 2021. This document aims to demonstrate that mitigation measures have been taken to reduce the risk of overheating in new builds.
We can provide overheating assessments for residential developments to ensure compliance with part O. Our services include creating a 3D dynamic thermal model along with a report in accordance with CIBSE TM59. If necessary, we also offer mitigation measures, which may include passive or controlled strategies. Additionally, we are pleased to offer a complimentary review of your project drawings during the design stage, aiming to identify potential issues early on.
